A group of prospectors called the Four Georgians, discovered gold during the year 1864, within a gulch of the Prickly Pear Valley. The discovery of gold resulted in the founding of a camp called "Last Chance". The population rapidly grew to over 200 and during the fall of the year 1846 a group of local men met to establish a proper town, including the election of commissioners and the plan of the streets. The committee eventually decided on a new name, Helena. Helena has an historic downtown district with street names evoking the gold rush period, such as "Last Chance Gulch", the name of the main street.

Helena has enjoyed some economic stability over the years as it serves as the state capital. The county, state, and federal government jobs provide many jobs for the cities residents. Nearly 33 percent of Helena's workforce is made up of government positions. The city of Helena is situated in a region rich in lead and silver deposits, and mining is still a major industry with plants that process minerals located throughout the city.

The city's daily newspaper is the Independent Record. Sports teams include Helena Bighorns Tier III Junior A hockey team and Helena Brewers minor league baseball. Helena is serviced by Helena Regional Airport.
